My Reservations

One upon a time, not that long ago and not so far away, when I was a kid, we had a servant at our home, called 'Rajani's mom' [ RM from here onwards.] She lived nearby, and had two kids, and the stereotypical, good for nothing husband. She did the jobs in and around the house, and went to the nearby cashew nut factory during day time. My mom and the other elders called her Ramani, but for me, she was always RM.

Now, Rajani and Rati always studied hard. My mom gave them some of the stuff which I never used. Those girls never had any tuition, except for some math and English classes which my mom took for their 10th standard exams. It was expected of them to get a job and do well in life, so they too put in their best.

Finally, Rajani managed to get a good rank in the medical entrance. We naturally expected her to get a medical admission. My mom began to explain the various student loan benefits to her mother. However, after counseling the girl did not make through.

Why?

Because another SC/ST candidate got the seat. Now, the candidate who got through was the daughter of a government office worker couples. She had been having tuitions in the best centers, studying in the best schools and colleges available, having 24x7 electricity and no hand me down clothes or torn books.

Which is less than what Rajani had. Rajani finally took up nursing. We felt bad. Everyone felt bad.

Now whenever I hear about reservations, I think about people like Rajani. Would she have benefited from all the pandemonium? I guess not. Chances are that children of tax evading business men who live a life of luxury and IAS officers will. And unless the government has a spine to bring forth the creamy layer rule [ exemption of economically forward SC/ST/OBC candidates from reservation and counting them as part of the general population ] people like Rajani are not going to benefit from it.

Looking at the other side of the coin, many of my upper caste friends are swearing that they will never go to an OBC/SC/ST doctor now. That they may doubt the merit of a SC/ST/OBC professional now. What if that person just got through reservations, and is an idiot?

The caste lines are being repeatedly defined by our government. Only if it had been done on monetary basis - atleast that line is fluid, not permanent.

F*** the B**en C***ts without brains who thought up this amazing idea.

I know many Sc/st guys who are in software jobs and who came from rural parts of TN. Most of their families were in distress. I know an OBC guy (who lost his father and sold his land to continue his studies) who came from tamil medium school and who has got an admit at IIM - c(u know that how tough it is to clear verbal part even if someone comes from English medium). Now none of them would have succeeded incase they didnt make it thru reservations in UG.
"Reservation affects merit" - may be in true in other states but not in TN.
The number of Forward caste students who made it in 1500 medical seats in TN - 20 to 25 (now note that there are around 400 seats in merit ).All other Merit seats were cornered by OBC/MBC/SC/ST. This has been trend for the past 3 years. The gal who topped the 12 std exams was a farmer's daughter from the backward namakkal district.
Anna university is consistently ranked in top 10 engg colleges(india today rankings). TN has got almost 70 % reservations .
FYI : TN is second most industrialized state(after Maha) and Second best in social indices (after kerala).
Ask someother state with less percentage in reservations to match this. I also know that many candidates from OC community will be affected. But then This system works.... Im also not averse to the idea of creamy layer. We can remove the creamy layer from getting seats.

P.s : I belong to forward caste and couldnt make into Anna University Computer science because of reservations. But then I know its a must.

Using one example to defend/prosecute a policy is foolishness. For every Rajani, you could find x, y and z in the OBC/MBC/SC/ST for whom even primary education remains a faraway dream.

After thousands of years of ostracizing/oppression it's only fair that efforts be taken to level the playing field. Only in Kerala and other forward states where the standard of living is comparable between the different castes can you spot such instances of Rajani. What about the other states?

People against reservation are now crying unfair that creamy layer is taking undue advantage of reservations. Yes, they are! This is because even though the policy was introduced with a good intent, it was inherently faulty. We lacked visionaries who could have foreseen such a situation. This does NOT mean that reservations in itself is a bad idea.

Agreed that current reservation policy sucks! Throw in the spice called twisted-vote-bank-politics and the whole thing starts stinking.

Ya,
1)The Rajanis of the country should be benefited-reservations have to be made that ways.
2)The creamy layer should NEVER be benefitted.

I know a case of a Latin Catholic family, flithy rich, doing business and lots of money in real estate business, their daugher making it into a medical college 'coz of being from OBC.

About ur frnds not willing to go to SC/ST doctors, I decided this long back when I was in Warangal. Half the junta of docs are from backward communities and sure they would have got a seat into a medical college killing some "able fowrard" candidate's chances....and then end up starting a small clinic/dispensary.....plz...I can't take a risk....

Well...I dont wanna get into a debate here...when is our country gonna learn from the mistakes...?..and for how long are v gonna spoonfeed our generations with reservations...??
Its not the idea of reservations to the OBC which irks me..its the political agenda behind it which pisses me off...

The reason for this reservation mess as well as other evils in our society is because professionals and honest educated people have not come forward to participate in the political process. Many Criminals, uneducated and corrupt persons have taken the place instead. They use educated or Nehru family persons on the top as a front only.

If professionals want to make a real difference they should immediately form a new party open only to, professionals (doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, lawyers, Ph. D. holding academics, professional students from leading colleges like IIT, IIM, I. Sc., Industrialists and NRI’s only). A few politicians who have openly opposed reservations like Kapil Sibal and Navjot Siddhu should be invited to guide in the political process. The agenda of the new party should be

1. Make all casteism illegal and abolish all proposed and existing reservations
2. Genuinely help backward communities by improving there living and financial conditions, providing good education right where they live from nursery up
3. Have zero tolerance for corruption
4. But all issues on back burner until basics like electricity, water, and timely justice in courts is established

The new party should then field candidates in all elections, by-elections at all levels in the country and shun games like seat adjustments. They will win surely because Indians are fed up with the mess.

The need of the hour is to redefine "backward communities". The traditional definition has been based on the caste of the people.
Instead, this should be redefined based on the financial condition of the people. I am sure there will be no opposition if there is reservation for financially-backward people.

But expecting that from our politicians is not unlike expecting a test hundred from Monty Panesar.

Don't have time to post a detailed comment :(.
But for the time being, read
this.
In devil's advocate, Karan Thapar has exposed the incompetence and ignorance of the idiot we have as our HRD minister. It is clear that his glib arguments are totally baseless. If poeple are happy with these kind of A$$***** ruling us, I don't know where this country is heading to.
